Scientists predict that the 21st Century will be a
time of Biotechnology and it is quickly becoming one of this century's leading
industries. Biotechnology-derived products have the potential to positively
change our society, from improving health care and increasing agricultural
products to producing a cleaner environment. The public markets recognize this
potential, and a lot of money has flown into biotechnology companies. Sales,
revenues and market capitalization all more than doubled during the period from
1993 to1999. In fact, the year 2000 saw more money invested in biotechnology
than the previous five years combined.
Understanding this trend, the Business and Industry Services Division of
Harry S Truman College is committed to designing and delivering a variety of
customized training and consulting programs.

Health Care Training Services
According to the Department of Commerce, healthcare spending in the United
States has increased from less than 5% of total spending in the mid-50s to more
than 11% in the late 1980s. The increase on healthcare spending is due to a
variety of factors, including an expansion in available services and
technologies, and an expansion of clients as a result of government programs
and employer health plans. In response, healthcare professionals as well as
hospitals are becoming specialist in critical care, and other services are
shifting to ambulatory care facilities, nursing homes, specialized testing and
technical facilities, and private homes. Despite this healthcare strategic
move, the demand for services is not being satisfied due to a large shortage of
well-trained healthcare professionals compounded by an ever-increasing turnover
rate estimated at about 18 months.
In response to the healthcare needs, the Business and Industry Services Division
designs and delivers customized training and consulting programs.
