While the U.S. Labor Department maintains that the
rapid changes and increasing complexity of electronic and organizational
networks in the modern economy require above average writing, reading and math
job skills, a recent survey found that 75% of employed adults have difficulties
reading and/or writing. This alone, is estimated, to cost taxpayers and
businesses $20 billion per year.
In Chicago, according to the U.S. Census, 35% of the 25 year old and over
population has not completed high school, and close to half a million people do
not speak or write English very well, the majority of whom are active in the
labor force.
In an effort to partner with Chicago businesses to address the basic skills and
English as a Second Language (ESL) needs of the labor force, we, at the Business
and Industry Services Division of Harry S Truman College, are committed
to designing and delivering state of the art Basic Skills and English as a
Second Language for the Workplace training and consulting programs.
