Harry S Truman College, understanding that training represents an investment in any company's future by increasing profit and productivity and employee motivation, is working directly with companies to design customized training and consulting programs that suit their needs through its Business and Industry Services Division.

"Our mission is to design training and consulting services that contribute to the success of your organization by assisting in the development of your employees whether entry level or management. With that in mind, our training programs specifically seek to enhance the value of diversity in your workforce, help employees understand working as a team to accomplish your company goals, and foster effective communication."

The recent Workforce Economics article, The Future of Worker Training: Business/Community College Partnerships, maintains that "It is critical that businesses establish reliable, long term pipelines of qualified workers and improve the skills of their current workforce. Community colleges have the infrastructure to provide such services and the flexibility to customize training that meets the needs of local businesses." Understanding this nature of our partnership with the Businesses in Chicago, we, at the Business and Industry Services Division of Truman College, offer state of the art, demand-sensitive training in the following areas:

  • Management, Professional Development / Strategic Training (e.g. Zenger Miller Training*, Team Building,
    Project Management, Supervision, Customer Service)
  • Information Technology / Computer Applications
(e.g. Oracle, Novell, Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Programming Languages)
  • Manufacturing Technology & Industrial Services
    (e.g. OSHA/Safety, Machine Operations, ISO 9000,
    Blue Print Reading)
  • Biotechnology / Health Care Training Services
(e.g. Bioinformatics, Food Service Sanitation Certification,
IV Therapy Certification, Medical Equipment In- services)
  • Basic Skills / ESL for the Workplace (e.g. Literacy, Reading, Writing, and Math, ESL: Business Writing)

*We have partnered with Zenger Miller to bring the Chicago Businesses quality-training programs at a very affordable price.
These training classes are delivered in the following formats:
- Trainer-Led - Web-Based (e-learning)
- Distance Learning - Satellite-Based -CD Rom
In an effort to be responsive to the training needs of local
businesses, we use the following service process at the Business and Industry Services Division:

  1. Needs Analysis:
With your assistance and the assistance of subject matter experts, assessment methodologies and instruments, we determine your training needs.
  2. Program Design:
Taking into account audience, time, budget, internal resources, and your business requirements, we develop customized training and consulting programs designed around your company's needs.
  3. Implementation:
After defining the program that best suits your needs, we offer the service at your location or at our campus with business-experienced and subject-matter trained instructors and consultants in a schedule that is convenient to your business requirements.
  4. Post-Training Evaluation:
Once the training program is delivered, we evaluate it to make sure the training objectives have been accomplished and your needs have been addressed.

The Future of Worker Training: Business/Community College Partnerships article also maintains that "Because community colleges are a relative low-cost alternative to in-house or customized private training programs (according to one company's estimate, worker training costs approximately $16 per hour through a community college program and $40 per hour to provide that same worker with in-house training)..." community colleges, including Harry S. Truman College, are positioning themselves as the training partner of choice with local businesses. We, at the Business and Industry Services Division, not only offer cost effective training, but we also assist companies in obtaining other financial resources such as training grants that local and state agencies provide.
